Dear Hong Kong Team,

You guys had already spent up all the bad luck affiliated with the journey.
(Remember our theory ? A small scratch on the nose cone would save your plane away from major disaster ! )

Therefore, cheer up.

All the good wind, good lift and good sleep…….etc., will stay with you throughout out the journey.
:D :P :D :P

Today, we have the first day practice, but again, no wind!
The slope we fly is Laurac slope which is a bow shape facing southeast. However, today the wind is disappointing, varying from 0 to 6m/s. So we actually did very little flying. There were many forced landings due to no lift. The organizer predicts that tomorrow will be similar and only Sunday the wind will pick up.
Let's talk a bit about the slope, it is one of the most difficult slope I have ever experienced in particular in light lift condition as today. sinking, sidewind are everywhere. When the wind picked up a bit in late afternoon, turbulance came also. The setup we used in HK is definitely no good for this slope. I test-flew my FR3 and Strega. Strega is no hope at all in this situation, it flies like a sitting duck. FR3 is also very challenging, sometime it picked up sometime it sunk. Anyway, I saw many FR3 in the contest, I think it is one of the most popular model here, at least 1/3 of the pilots flying FR3. Franz himself flew his brand new design FR4 which seems very responsive to thermonic situation. You guys properly need to save up more money for it later when it is mass-produced.
He told me that he has a brand new FR3 in the box he brings it over here for sale. It is with RDS and much lighter. Eric and Mak are seriously thinking to buy it; they are now trying to resolve who would have the priority to grab it! Currently Mak has the highest chance because Mrs. Mak is behind him in a very supporting mood. I met many top pilots here, they are really good even in this wind condition, believe me, we have a long way to catch up
Kevin Newton is staying in the same hotel we are, actually he was the first F3F pilot I spotted in this trip when I went down to lobby to have breakfast this morning. Actually, many pilots have arrived much earlier, and they said they have already flying with 10-15m/s wind in St. Ferriol slope yesterday. Anyway, we are unfortunately to come late and miss the wind. Anyway, hope the wind will pick up in later days.

C.M., the organizer made a jacket for each contesting pilot, you see they did the same mistake we were for the Hong Kong flag!

Oh, it is not only upside down, the emblem is incorrect. :? To be serious, I think it is not respecting. But anyway, it should only be a careless mistake and unfortunately happens on the Hong Kong Team.

Stanley, Mak and Eric, hope that's the end of all mishaps. You have all the supports from Hong Kong! Enjoy the competition, it may the the last "casual Viking Race"!

We supposed to start our first day competition in 1pm. But the wind didn’t pick up until after 6pm and we waited almost a whole day from 9am to 6pm. Anyway, the organizer managed to run two rounds from 6pm to 8:20pm. There were two groups of pilots. HK team was flying in Slope A which is in the upper level. The slope is really challenging, wind almost 45 degree off slope normal and only about 5m/s wind, so the timing for our group is not that good. The fastest times for rounds 1 and 2 are 52.xx and 52.xx respectively, which compare with Slope B result of 48.xx and 43.xx, our group are in fact in very difficult condition. Anyway, HK team did quite poor in these two rounds:

Stanley 73.xx and 56.xx
Mak 62.xx and 65.xx
Eric 65.xx and 61.xx

We hope to do better when we are getting accustomed to the slope condition later days.

Guess who is pilot 14? Kevin Newton is the most unlucky guy today. A helper launched his plane which also grabbed his hat on the wing. Kevin's plane finally crashed down and got a DNF!
Image

Landing is very difficult here, no grass cusion for our plane, this poor chap landed outside the designated area and got a 100 point penalty!

Todays wind condition was every difficult.

When Stanley fly in the first round, the side wind was at an angle of 45 degree at most of the time!

It's a very hard day :x

We have 5 rounds of competition today. Round 8 was almost completed just before the rain started coming in, so it finally cancelled after 30 minutes wait,

We flew in slope B (lower slope) for round 3 to round 6. This is the most challenging slope we have flown so far, not only because of the difficult landing (walk up hill with obstructed view), the slope itself has lot of turbulence. Wind speed is at average 10 to 12 m/s, the slope is capable of fast time provided that you did it right with right flying pattern. The setting of the model is definitely very important also.

I did pretty bad today trying to adapt to the slope with various flying patterns every round and still couldn’t work out which one can run fast under strong turbulence. Ballast setting is also very important; too heavy you will run like a sitting duck, too light you will battle with strong head wind and turbulence, I would said I has never experienced this kind of slope before. Our Robin Nest north slope in strong wind condition is definitely better than this slope. It is just so difficult to fly here! Anyway, luckily, we all completed the rounds and landings with no major mishap. Round 7 was in slope A (upper) which as said before has very strong side wind. I did quite ok for this slope though.

After 7 rounds, my position is dropped to 44, Eric did very well and is climbing up steadily to 46. Ah Mak is really no hope, he flew his RaceM like dancing around. Anyway, hope we will do better in the coming days.
I took some photos of the official score sheets from round 1 to round 7, enjoy.

I would say this group of European flyers are extreme of the extreme, they not only fly very well, very accurate, precise but also 博哂命,絕對係要分唔要機個種,比台灣飛友更亡命,香港飛友真係太斯文啦!
